Do I Need Prior Martial Arts Experience to Start Muay Thai?
The Short Answer
No — you don't need any prior martial arts experience to start Muay Thai. The vast majority of new students at our Cedar Park gym walk in with zero background in combat sports, and classes are structured to teach everything from the ground up.
What Beginners Actually Learn First
Your first classes focus on stance, basic footwork, and the core strikes — jab, cross, kick, and knee — broken down step by step with a coach correcting your form. There's no assumption that you already know how to throw a punch or check a kick.
Does Experience in Other Sports Help?
Background in boxing, wrestling, or another combat sport can shorten the learning curve for specific skills, but it's not a requirement, and plenty of Muay Thai's best students started as complete beginners. General athleticism helps less than most people expect — consistency and coachability matter more than any prior training.
What If I've Never Thrown a Punch in My Life?
That's the normal starting point for most people who walk through our doors. Coaches are used to teaching absolute beginners and will slow things down, repeat instructions, and build your confidence one rep at a time. See our guide on whether you need to be fit to start Muay Thai if you're also worried about your fitness level.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I feel out of place as a total beginner?
No — most students start with no experience, and classes are built around teaching fundamentals from scratch.
How long until I feel comfortable with the basics?
Most students feel noticeably more comfortable within a few weeks — see our full guide on how long it takes to get good at Muay Thai.
Should I watch videos to prepare before my first class?
It's not necessary — showing up with an open mind matters far more than any homework beforehand.
