What Should I Expect in My First Muay Thai Class?

The Short Answer

Expect a structured hour built around a warm-up, technique instruction, pad work, and a cool-down — with a coach guiding you through every step and no pressure to keep up with more experienced students.

Class Structure, Step by Step

  • Warm-up (10-15 minutes): light cardio, dynamic stretching, and movement drills to get your body ready
  • Technique breakdown: a coach demonstrates and explains a strike or combination in detail
  • Pad or bag work: practicing what you just learned, often with a partner holding pads
  • Conditioning or cool-down: a short finisher and stretching to close out class

Will I Be Expected to Spar?

No — sparring is never part of a first class, and it's always optional once you've built up technique and experience. Most beginners spend their first several months focused entirely on technique and pad work.

Will I Be Paired With Advanced Students?

Classes are structured so newer students can train at their own pace, often grouped or paired thoughtfully by a coach who's watching the room. You won't be thrown in with people years ahead of you with no guidance.

What to Bring and Wear

You don't need any gear for your first class — full details are in our guide on what to wear to your first Muay Thai class.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a typical class?

Most classes run about 60 minutes, including warm-up and cool-down.

Do I need to know any terminology beforehand?

No — coaches introduce terms like "jab," "teep," and "clinch" as you go.

What if I have to stop and take a break?

That's completely normal, especially in your first few classes — water breaks and pacing yourself are expected and encouraged.
